French Exchange

The French exchange between Coláiste Rís and St. Philippe de Girard, Avignon was established in 2007 and has continued since. It continues to grow in popularity as pupils make new friends while improving their French in a relaxed and conducive atmosphere. Surrounded by the 14th century gothic palace and bathing in the warm Mediterranean climate, Avignon provides a fantastic opportunity for transition year and fifth year pupils to immerse themselves in the language, culture and traditions of the French people. The exchange programme matches one Coláiste Rís pupil with one French pupil of similar age and interests. Pupils are matched as early as possible to allow them to form friendships via email before meeting each other for the first time. Coláste Rís pupils spend one week in May living with their French penpal. The French pupil then spends one week in Dundalk the following September.
While on the exchange both groups of pupils experience many cultural activities during school hours. Previous visits to Avignon have included visits to Marseille, Nimes, Palais des Papes, an amphitheatre, a Van Gogh exhibition, several museums, canoeing on the Rhône and many more activities. During the evenings and weekends pupils spend time with their host family and friends surrounded by native speakers. The informal setting with teenagers of their own age allows pupils to converse in a natural manner rarely found in a classroom environment.
