Above are moments from our recent visit from the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina to our school to celebrate 150 years of CBS in Dundalk.
The much awaited 150th Celebration Gala ball tickets are shortly available. The gala ball presents a unique opportunity for pupils past and present to meet, reminisce over old times and enjoy a nights craic in the Carrickdale on 23rd November. Tickets (€50) are very limited unfortunately and only available on the following dates: Tuesday 22nd October 9-12 in both the primary and secondary schools and again on Friday the 25th October 9-12 in both schools. Sales are limited to 2 per person. Note the 150th Centenary book will be available at these times also.
Also in our pictures are photos of Justin O'Hagan; a finalist at 2019 Frank Maher Classical Music Awards. Justin O’Hagan (17), a sixth year student at Colaiste Ris, Dundalk, Co. Louth was one of only six young musicians and the only one from Louth to reach the finals of the 2019 Top Security Frank Maher Classical Music Awards. With a €5,000 top prize, it is Ireland’s largest such competition for secondary schools. Justin plays the piano and performed two pieces on the night; ‘First Movement from Sonata in F Minor’ by Beethoven and ‘Sinfonia No.6 in E Major’ by Bach.Celebrated musician and songwriter Phil Coulter acted as master of ceremonies for the evening as Justin and the other finalists competed in front of a live audience at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin to win the top prize of €5,000, which was won by cellist Michael Murphy (18) from Presentation Brothers College in Cork. Justin was presented with a €300 bursary by Emmet O’Rafferty, chairman of the Top Security Group.

On Friday 11th October, all first year students attended the annual Gael Linn table quiz and Céilí which was held in the Lisdoo. The students all had a very enjoyable day and took part in the quiz, singing and Céilí dancing with other local schools. Congratulations to one of our teams from 1Q who came first in the quiz and will progress to the next round in January. Pictured above with accompanying teachers Ms Keelan and Ms Crimmins
Some TY students received training on Wednesday 16th October to become Peer Educators for the HSE initiative ‘Tooth Led Teens’. This education programme aims to promote good dental health amongst students. The programme will be delivered to our First Year students through their Wellbeing classes after the midterm break. Pictured above are these students receiving the training.
Coláiste Rís will host an evening featuring John Lonergan, the former governor of Mountjoy Prison, for a talk entitled “How to Be Happy and Content”, Thursday October 17th @8pm. Described as stimulating and thought provoking, his speeches focus on positivity, relationships and communication. John entered the prison service in 1968 and rose to become the most senior prison officer in the country, leading to the inspiration to his many talks. Suitable for everyone from all backgrounds, the aim is help you to create a road map to help find happiness and contentment in your life. The author, motivational speaker and born storyteller never fails to engage with his audience, and the event is not to be missed. The talk is free and open to the public and will be held in Coláiste Rís on Thursday October 17 at 8pm. No tickets are required for the event, those interested can show up on the evening

Our commemorative book for 150 years is now on sale in the school office, cost is 20 euros.
Events in celebration of this tremendous occasion of 150 years of CBS Education in Dundalk will take place throughout May 2019 and later in the year; October & November details will be posted at a later date.
