First Year Admissions

There is a limited number of places for first years in Coláiste Rís. Approximately 100 new students are admitted each year. Our Open Night takes place before Halloween. Everyone who has submitted an application for the following September will be invited but all are welcome. We divide this group into 4 classes. The college has been coeducational for many years; boys and girls are accepted in all 4 classes.

Places are offered in accordance with the college’s admissions policy. This policy acknowledges the special relationship that has always existed with the C.B.S. Primary School. The college is also very aware of the long tradition of providing education for the Greater Dundalk, North, and Mid Louth areas and this is also reflected in the admissions policy. One of our 4 classes provides education through the medium of Irish. Places are offered in this class based on our assessment tests, candidate interest, and suitability. All places are offered on an equal basis according to our admissions policy. The importance of the date of application cannot be overstated and prospective applicants should return an application form as soon as possible.

Students who are offered a place are invited to sit our assessment tests in the Spring before they enter. A specific class place is offered on the basis of these tests. Since September 2002 all the first-year classes are of mixed ability; at the end of first year these mixed groups are rearranged for honours and pass in certain core subjects. Of the four first-year classes three study through the medium of English and one studies through the medium of Irish. The college has offered education through Irish for the past eighty years. Places in this Irish class are much sought after and it is not a pre-requisite that the incoming student should have attended an All Irish Primary School.

Having been offered a place in a specific class students and their parents are invited to an “Information Night” which normally takes place in mid-May. On this night much valuable information is given about all aspects of the college. At the beginning of September, we welcome our new intake of students. They are invited to start in Coláiste Rís two days before the main body of students. We can all remember how different second level was when compared to primary school. Having the school to themselves provides them with a good chance to get used to the new building and timetable arrangements. Within a few more days we find that they have settled in well.

Please note – in line with The Education (Admission to Schools) Act 2018 the school can no longer accept applications in advance of October 1st of 6th class.
